That which we call a rose … (with apologies to the Bard.)

Building on my previous post, I’d like to take a moment to comment on product naming strategies. I suspect most companies in our machine vision world were founded and are run by engineers. And engineers are not necessarily the most … artistic … people in the world, with the result that they give their creations boring numerical designations intended to convey what the product is. The MV-D1024E-160 is just one example; I’m sure you can come up with more. Now while it is technically descriptive (Machine Vision, 1024 resolution, 160 fps, no idea what the ‘E’ signifies,) it isn’t fun.

What if Ford had launched the A289V6-2-110? (Automobile, 289 cubic inch V6, 2 doors, 110 mph top speed.) Would that have caught the imagination as well as “Mustang”? I doubt it.

So let’s have more Pikes, Stingrays, Piranhas, and yes, even Guppies, (check out
www.dalsa.com and www.alliedvisiontec.com if you don’t know what I’m talking about,) and please, a few less DC-1600-CL3-SX designations. (Yes I made that last one up.)
