Last year (2007) our friends over at the AIA ratified the “Power over Camera Link” (PoCL) standard. I’m going to suggest that this is a solution in search of a problem.
By putting about 4W through the cable, PoCL removes the need to run a power supply out to the camera. But, I have to purchase a compatible camera, cable and a grabber that can supply power, so I’m skeptical whether I save anything. Simplifying cabling is useful, but it’s not my number one challenge when I develop an application.
Will I be rushing to buy PoCL hardware? I doubt it, but I’d like to hear from anyone who has found it indispensable.
