If you live in the US you’re probably familiar with the “Geek Squad,” those mobile tech support guys who’ll come out to your house to fix your computer (personally, I suspect it’s less expensive to buy a new PC, but that’s just my opinion.) Well, according to this article in “Test & Measurement World,” Matrox Imaging have put together something similar for machine vision.
I imagine there are some limitations: I doubt they’ll come to my house, and I can’t imagine them helping with my Cognex VisionPro system, but in principle I think the idea of tech support in-depth is a good one.
It does however raise an interesting issue: machine vision is very complex and getting even a “low end” smart camera to perform reliably takes more time and effort than a typical manufacturing engineer can afford to spend. So is there a case for large companies to set up their own in-house “Vision Squad”? Pushing the idea further, might this idea have some commercial value?
You heard it here first!

You make a good point that getting even a low end vision sensor to work well can be very challanging. Most companies cannot or are not choosing to have an in-house vision squad in todays out-sourcing environment. This is where a good machine vision integrator comes in. Cognex has a network of PSI's Partner System Integrators that specialize in guaranteed turnkey machine vision solutions.
