Basler, the German manufacturer of cameras and “solutions” is another company who recently reported a strong first half for 2008. Performance and outlook were perhaps not quite as good as for Dalsa – the two go head-to-head in most camera markets – and it may just be that it’s easier to make money selling cameras than inspection systems. I suspect the latter need a lot more effort to generate a sale, and a higher level of after sales support.
So if you want to make money in machine vision, components are where the action lies. Integration is just damn hard work.
I don’t expect to hear too many arguments with that!
