Monitoring processes by video

Interesting article in the January ’09 Control Engineering magazine about using ethernet (or I.P.) cameras to monitor industrial processes. Now as the author points out, this is not machine vision because there is no analysis of the imagery – that is left to human eyes. But how long before machine vision tools are brought to bear?

Have you considered using smart cameras in applications that are not strictly industrial – monitoring a series of loading docks and perhaps providing appropriate aids for truck drivers, for example? Or monitoring parts exiting a belt furnace and flagging a part-jam condition?

Take a walk through your facility and I think you’ll find many applications suitable for remote monitoring. The technology exists, all it needs is imagination.
