The 'special occasions' camera

Just as every woman needs a little black dress in her closet (or so my wife tells me,) every machine vision specialist needs a 2 Mp camera tucked away for that special occasion.

Let me explain. You've probably got several VGA cameras that you can use for trials, and for many jobs of the present/absent sort that's sufficient resolution. But every now and then along comes a project that needs something a little extra. That's where a sensor of 1600 x 1200 comes in handy. With 2 million pixels you can get enough resolution to make fairly precise measurements, or to read multiple codes in a single field-of-view.

So it's a good thing that Matrox have finally gotten around to launching the 2Mp version of the little purple
Iris GT smart camera. I've been a fan of this product from Day 1but it's the high-res version that I've been waiting for. The VGA Iris GT, bundled with Design Assistant, (the flow chart programming method for non-programmers,) lists at $5k but there's no word yet on pricing for this model. However, when coupled with the MIL software package, this is going to be a very powerful addition to the toolbox and a serious competitor to the high-end Cognex Insight models.
