Machine Vision – where do you start?

Any time you need to move into an area that’s new to you, it’s always wise to take advice from experts in the field. And in machine vision, experts don’t come any more expert than Perry West, President of Automated Vision Systems Inc. of San Jose, California.

On his web site you can sign up for a free on-line machine vision basics course, which I recommend for the newbie, and Perry will also be pleased to offer you his consulting services. But if it’s just a primer on how to get started, you might like to read “Choosing the Right Vision Technology,” (Vision & Sensors, June 29, 2009.)

In this wide-ranging article Perry discusses the various flavors of machine vision on offer, from general purpose to application specific. He also offers some advice on managing a machine vision project, which includes the tip that, “Someone on the project team must understand the manufacturing process.”

If you’ve read my posting, “Know your enemy,” you’ll know that I agree wholeheartedly. It’s not sufficient to just know machine vision, you need to understand the application.

Like I said, Perry is the experts expert.
