Rolling shutter, global shutter

Do you know the difference? Do you care?

Well if a CMOS camera is on your shopping list it would be smart to understand the pros and cons of each. Having recently been in that position myself, I’d like to share a couple of links to sites that will help.

For the technical explanation, take a look at “Key differences between rolling shutter and frame (global) shutter,” on the Point Grey web site

However, if you’re more interested in just seeing what the difference actually means in terms of image quality, take a look at “Sensor Artifacts and CMOS Rolling Shutter,” by Barry Green and published on dvuser.com. There are a couple of really nice animations that do a terrific job of showing the images resulting from the different sensor types.

And if you’re too lazy to click the links, just remember this: never use a rolling shutter when the object you’re imaging is in motion.
