Those of you who’ve been following my musings will recall that last year I was very enthusiastic about Roborealm®. This is a machine vision software product aimed the robotics hobbyist. To meet the needs of this market, the product:
- Is easy to use
- Hooks up to a web cam
- Is, or rather was, free.
Yeah, it was free, but now it’s not. If you want the latest version it will cost you $90, although a 30 day evaluation is available, and there are discounts for educational users.
To be honest with you, I don’t think this pricing is unreasonable. Roborealm is fast moving from a hobby tool to a professional imaging processing product. It still doesn’t have quite the sophistication of say ImageJ, but on the other hand it will work with live images streamed in from a web cam. There’s even a module to work with the Linksys wireless camera, which ought to open up some really interesting possibilities.
I’ve searched for other machine vision software products that will work with a web cam, and frankly, I’ve drawn a blank. Yes you can use LabVIEW, but that’s not inexpensive, and I don’t know of any other options.
If you know better, please share your thoughts with us.

Scorpion works with all Windows Imaging devices, so standard Webcas work well too. I tested once in real system replacing a "real" camera with webcam and it worked without problems (ecept image quality was awful:).
