I am convinced that machine vision is on the cusp of explosive growth in automotive applications. Already we have lane departure warning systems, back-up assist and road sign monitoring, next will be 360o situational awareness.
For further evidence, watch this video from Altec Corporation of Taiwan.
This shows how multiple cameras mounted to the four sides of a car can create a kind of bird’s eye view, enabling the driver to park in confined spaces. Right now it’s just an imaging and display system, but how long before this becomes the heart of an automatic parking system, one that really works, I mean?

This is an excellent split view optical design. Very well done. Now it shouldn't be long.
