Basler are big in machine vision cameras, what they call “Components,” and not so big in “Solutions,” which are fully assembled inspection systems. And the results for Q3 2009 suggest this gulf is continuing to grow. Camera sales are off 30% for the year to date, as compared with the first nine months of ’08, but sales of “Solutions” are down nearly 60% for the same period.
Basler attribute part of the relative strength of their camera business to a recent foray into surveillance systems: seems like that was a pretty smart move! I just wonder if they’re going to persist with building inspection systems, or if they’ll decide to leave that business to the integrators. After all, building production equipment in low volumes is very different to assembling and selling cameras.
Am I the only one who can imagine ISRA snapping up that part of the business, leaving Basler with the funds to really focus on camera R&D?
