Uncertainty in machine vision measurements (2 of 2)

Previously we saw how there is always uncertainty in any measurement we might perform. So how can we develop a gauging system to help us control a process or inspect a part?

Well for that I’m going to defer to Don Wheeler. Writing in Quality Digest (“Is the Part in Spec?” June 1st, 2010) Don explores how to accommodate measurement uncertainty when putting together a gauging system.

It’s an interesting, albeit rather technical (read mathematical) paper written as a general guide rather than as something specific to machine vision. That said, I think the discussion of “probable error” and “measurement increment” is highly relevant to anyone developing a camera-based gauging system, though you’ll probably need to read it several times to be sure of grasping every nuance.

Happy edge-detecting!
