Scorpion is something of a late entrant to the vision world, but owner Thor Vollset is pushing hard to become a serious player in the mid to high end of the PC vision market.
One of the obstacles I’m sure he’s battling is corporate inertia. When a company is familiar and comfortable with a product there’s often great reluctance to try something new, even if it might provide capabilities they’re sorely missing.
I imagine this is why Thor has launched a “Scorpion 2D Vision Starter kit.” Priced at around €1,000 (that’s gotta be circa $1,300 in greenbacks,) this provides a fairly inexpensive way to ‘roadtest’ Scorpion from the comfort of your own desk.
The camera choice is interesting: Thor has gone with a board-level Unibrain camera for the kit. Obviously, this saves a few bucks over a fully packaged camera, but it also suggests he might be aiming at the machine builder market rather than the end-user. And perhaps that’s a smart strategy.
