Everyone in machine vision wants applications with lots of replication potential, and the biggest of them all may well be biometrics. Biometrics is the business of identifying people from some unique characteristic, and so is of great interest to those in law enforcement and security. If you’re interested in learning more, a great little primer was recently published on the AIA web site.
Under the heading “Machine Vision Puts Bold Face On Growing Biometrics Industry,” Winn Harding runs through the strengths and weaknesses of the main biometric technologies. One that he misses, and which I find intriguing, is gait analysis. This is identifying people by the way they walk, which might seem far-fetched but actually seems to have some potential. (Google it if you don’t believe me.)
