Familiar with LPR?

If you answered “no” to that question, allow me to explain. LPR stands for License Plate Recognition and it’s the technology underlying the speed cameras that are proliferating throughout much of the world.

LPR is essentially an optical character recognition (OCR) application, but one where the whole image has to be searched and where the environment is pretty much unconstrained. As in all areas of machine vision, the technology is advancing all the time, so I thought readers might enjoy this peek at the state-of-the-art, courtesy of The Consumerist (“No Car Will Escape This “Future Now” Speed Cam,” November 1st, 2011.) The video is particularly impressive.

If you want to get right to the source you need to visit Peak Gain Systems Inc, although frankly I found The Consumerist piece more informative.
