Measurement from images

Gauging with machine vision is difficult. There’s all that business with calibration so you can convert pixel dimensions into inches, or millimeters, or whatever floats your boat. But if you don’t jump through those hoops, (mixed metaphor anyone?) you’ll get poor repeatability and accuracy.

So how good can a system like uPhotoMeasure be?

According to NASA, it’s pretty good, although “Software Programs Derive Measurements from Photographs” only describes it as giving “at least 95% accuracy.” (What does that mean?)

Nit-picking aside, this is a cool piece of software that may have some applications in the machine vision world. I may be tempted to buy the desktop package.
