If
you only use smart cameras, or Keyence vision systems, this doesn’t
concern you. If however you’re a machine vision user who works with
PC-based systems, read on.
The
issue is interfaces. Now I have a strong feeling that more than 50%
of users give no thought to how the image gets from camera to
computer. Mostly likely they, or you, just pick up a camera with the
required resolution and get to work.
That’s
not a good idea. There are at least six interface standards, and they
all have their strengths and weaknesses. Deciding which is best for
your task means knowing what those are, which is why I suggest you
read “Choosing
a Vision Interface”
by Jim Camillo and published in the April 2013 edition of Assembly
magazine.
You’ll
need to register to read the whole article, which I find irritating.
(Isn’t it enough that I look at all the advertisements?) But that
said, it’s a good, fact-filled read, so take a look.
