Qualifying potential vendors

Many engineers have a few local companies they like to deal with, but before cutting the P.O. check that they’re up to the task. Begin by asking if they’ve done anything like this before. If they say yes, ask for references. If you are sent some, be sure to call them up and ask about the project.

Alternatively, you might decide to contact companies that you see featured in magazines like “
Vision Systems Design.” These companies are probably the cream of the crop when it comes to integration, but they are unlikely to give you the lowest price. There again, who wants to go with the lowest bid?

Another good place to search for competent integrators is through the
Buyers Guide on the AIA web site. Again, you won’t get low bids but you will find a high level of competence.

You’ll also want to satisfy yourself that they have the technical skills, and that’s why you need to read my next few posts.
