What’s the difference …


… between a 2D code reader and a smart camera? They both use a CCD or CMOS sensor, a lens, perhaps a light, and a processor that runs some image analysis software, so isn’t the code reader just a smart camera with reduced functionality?

I think so, which is why I shall be watching for
Datalogic to grow into the Omron/DVT realm. Their Matrix 400™ is the handy little sensor that could just launch them on their way to threaten the supremacy of Cognex. No info on pricing, and as I believe they’re a European company it could be a little steep for us Americans, but most definitely, this is a contender.
