A photographer on flickr who goes by the name of Paws2008 asks why camera images are rectangular when lenses are round. When you’ve stopped sniggering, give it some serious thought, because I think it’s a good question.
Now, if you know much about how CCD and CMOS sensors are fabricated you’ll understand that rectangular is the most economical way of slicing up the silicon, but if the economics could be addressed …?
One response to the question is especially thought-provoking. If the image sensor in your camera was circular, you could select the orientation of the image – portrait, landscape, 45 degrees – whatever you wanted. Now that might open up some possibilities.

wow this is an excellent posting. I never asked this question before I read this post. Actually I am curious to know the answer. As you say economics aside this should be possible.
Could they be rectangular more for ease of use and storage (of the photographs). TV, photos everywhere today we are used to the rectangular images. I think it is more to do with design issues than technology issues. What do you say Grey?
