Here’s yet another emerging field for machine vision: animal recognition. A couple of smart Aussies have put together a system for farmers that can distinguish between different types of animal. This allows them to ensure that scare resources, (food, water,) are only made available as and when appropriate.
A couple of things of particular interest are that the system is solar powered, and uses only a webcam. I do wonder though, if this a daylight only system, or if they are using the ability the webcam to detect NIR to provide a rudimentary night vision capability.
