Autofocus – Microscan got there first

Back on June 14th, (The end of focus problems?) I got quite enthusiastic about the new Dataman 200 codereader from Cognex with liquid lens technology.

Well I received a comment pointing out, very politely, that Microscan have had autofocus technology available on their Quadrus Mini range for some time. I couldn’t find any mention of the technology used, so I’m guessing that it’s not the liquid lens approach taken by Cognex – that comes from Varioptic. But if an electro-mechanical system achieves the same result, does it matter?
Perhaps the real lesson here is that it’s not enough just to incorporate useful technology; you have to let the world know about it.
