In praise of PoE

PoE in this context refers to Power over Ethernet, and for the uninitiated this is the extension of the GigE camera interface to provide electricity down the Ethernet cable. The benefit is, fairly obviously, reduced cabling, which, as discussed in Assembly magazine (“Single-Cable Camera Maximizes Efficiency,” July 27, 2009) is something of great interest to machine builders.

Bottom line? If you’re in the business of putting cameras on the end of robot arms, and worry greatly about cable flex and breakage, PoE is something you probably want to look in to.
