Machine vision is hot

Okay, that’s a corny title but it got your attention. My comment today refers to the announcement in Science Centric of a vision system – the “HoTubEye” project – developed by Technalia Technological Corporation for “the automatic inspection of hot steel surfaces”. This is a system intended for hot rolling processes where it will detect and classify defects in high temperature steel tubing. As it uses “special laser illumination,” and “three high resolution lineal cameras” it sounds pretty sophisticated.

It also sounds a lot like the HotEye™ developed by OG Technologies of Michigan, USA. This is a system for inspecting hot bar and rod in rolling mills. Now I know OG have been pushing this for a couple of years, so wouldn’t it be interesting to find out how the HoTubEye project differs ?

If anyone from OG Technology or Technalia is reading, would you like to provide some clarification?
