A very long time ago, when this blog was young, I happened upon a guy who was developing his own machine vision software. This was Ken Chapman, and his “baby” was called KamVu (“Cheap but good machine vision”.)
Well I have to confess that Ken and his project had rather fallen off my radar, but recently I was fortunate enough to rediscover his work. It seems he’s still plugging away at building a Linux-based product in his free time, but he also has a little venture underway with North Carolina State University. This is covered on the GaugeCam web site, which describes a project to develop a camera-based method of measuring water level, such as in a river or stream.
For those of you who are captivated by details of image processing algorithms, Ken shares details of the GaugeCam project on his KamVu blog. It’s a fascinating account of one man’s struggle to coax recalcitrant pixels into order and I think its well worth reading.
