Webcam versus machine vision cam

More than once I’ve been asked why it’s necessary to drop $500 or more on a machine vision camera when a webcam can be purchased for under $50.

Rather than get in to a long-winded technical explanation (that will come later), take a look at the two pictures I’m posting today. These are of the same target, taken at approximately the same working distance, and from almost the same position. The webcam actually had a 1.3Mp sensor, so I’ve cropped that image down to be the same 640 x 480 pixel size as the machine vision image. (Interestingly enough, I had to use a 4.5mm lens on the machine vision camera to get about the same field of view.)

First question: can you tell which picture was acquired with the webcam?

You should've converted the webcam image to greyscale also :)
