Stents are the kind of product where you really don’t want to get a faulty one, because stents, if you don’t know, are little sleeves that are inserted into blood vessels to keep them open. That’s why stent inspection is a great job for machine vision.
And what prompts this flash of medical insight, you may ask?
Well I recently saw a post on the medtechinsider blog, “Stent Inspection System Eliminates Human Error” (April 6, 2010,) that discusses just such a system, developed by Dutch machine vision integrator, GDO.
The blog posting just gives an overview; there are some great pictures, although sadly, insufficient technical detail, on the GDO website (you’ll need to open up the pdf about the “Nuremberg 2007 series”.)
The pictures suggest some very high resolution imaging, combined with a 3D technology (I’m guessing it’s laser triangulation,) to perform 100% inspection of what is a very complex, and very small, piece of medical engineering. Fascinating stuff, I just wish GDO would offer more details.
