Stocker-Yale out of, no, back in to, lasers

Back in October of ’09 Stocker-Yale sold its Montreal-based laser module business to Coherent. I for one thought that meant SY were going to concentrate on their LED business.

It seems I was wrong.

A
press release that has only now crossed my desk informs me that in January 2010 SY announced their InViso™ laser product line. This improves upon their former line in at least two ways:

1. The lasers have flat datum surfaces. This has to make it easier to both mount and align the lasers, something that can be an issue when setting up a structured light system.
2. The focus is externally adjustable. This is a big advance on the old SY approach to focusing, which entailed slipping off the optics and trying to focus the laser down to the smallest possible spot.

But now I have two questions. First, didn’t Coherent negotiate any kind of non-compete clause? I guess not or we’d have heard about it by now. And second, what was behind the sale of the Montreal operation? Was it just to raise much-needed cash or was there some strategic reason to get out of liabilities in Canada? (The new laser line is made in Ireland.)

Ahh, the business of business.
