Have you ever had that weird image effect where it looks as though you’re seeing the top half of one frame and the bottom half of a different frame? Well that’s called “tearing” and it can be a problem with both FireWire™ and USB cameras, especially if you’re running at high frame rates and closing in on the bandwidth limit.
Tearing has several causes. Sometimes it’s down to the monitor you’re using to view the images, but it can also result from ‘odd’ things going on inside your Windows PC.
There’s a great explanation of the causes of and solutions for imaging tearing in the Knowledge Base section of the Point Grey web site: “Image tearing causes and solutions.” Even if you don’t currently have a tearing problem, I’d encourage you to read the article: it has some good tips for managing some of the Windows processes that can interfere with data transmission.
When you’re done with the Knowledge Base, don’t forget to take a look at their various models of camera. I’ve always thought Point Grey have an interesting lineup of quality products.
