New 3D machine vision product

Machine vision companies come and go the way a cactus blooms in the desert: blink and you’ll miss it, but a few have been around forever. Names that spring to mind are PPT Vision, Cognex, and LMI.

That last one might have you scratching your head, but LMI have been in machine vision for over 30 years. It’s fair to say though that they’ve carved out a rather specialized niche in the world of laser-based measurement for automotive applications, which may be why you don’t know them. But with the launch of the “Gocator” that might be about to change.

Gocator is a clumsy name but the product, or more accurately, product family, is pretty interesting. It’s essentially a laser triangulation device similar to the 3D products from SICK, but in a compact package and with Ethernet capability. They’ve even incorporated a way to gang two Gocators together to create a larger effective sensor.

No word on pricing, but LMI say the product will be on show at Automate in Chicago later this month, so check it out there.
