Gauging cylinders

Backlighting is everyone’s favorite method for gauging, and it works great when you have flat, 2D shapes. Unfortunately, unless you’re in the circuit board business, most of the world manufacturers prismatic parts, which makes every gauging project a 3D task.

A particular challenge is measuring the diameter of a turned metal component. This takes both a telecentric lens AND a collimated, or telecentric, backlight.

If you’re wondering how that arrangement would work out, take a look at the video below, which I lifted from the website of Illinois integrator, Compass Automation. (I feel sure they won’t mind the free publicity. ;-) )

Lighting seems to be by way of a bi-telecentric lens from Opto-Engineering, but the camera lens has me baffled. I can honestly say I’ve never before seen such a construction. Perhaps one of my readers with an optics background could explain what we’re seeing?

Hey Brian,

That's a Light Works telecentric lens! If you'd like more details about that specially developed lens in particular, contact Compass Automation

In general, as we do with so many customers, we can provide customized solutions often for only small price and time premiums.
