Alternatives to machine vision

When you love working with cameras and lights it’s easy to forget there are other sensing technologies. Often, well let’s be honest, usually, these are easier to use than vision. Yes, they lack the data rich acquisition capabilities of a camera, but before grabbing that Cognex Insight or Keyence IV sensor, think about what the application really needs.

Now it may be that you’ve forgotten just what a regular sensor can do. In that case you might want to spend a few minutes looking over “Sensor basics: Types, functions and applications” published on EDN.com September 12th, 2013.

It’s quite a lengthy article but there are lots of embedded videos if you’re not a reader. I found it excellent, and given that the primary purpose of MachineVision4Users is to be a repository of interesting stuff, I decided it warranted a post.
