A friend of mine is setting up in business as a machine vision integrator and was trying to come up with a cool, memorable and relevant company name. Frustrated by finding all the good vision-related names registered, he came asking for my suggestions.
While I wasn’t a lot of help with creative ideas, I was able to confirm his complaint, particularly with regard to dot com names, which, let’s face it, are what everyone wants. Take www.ccd.com. Apogee Instruments have that one. (They sell cameras for lifescience and astronomy applications.) I suspect that domain is worth a lot of money in its own right. As an alternative, I also checked out www.ccd.org – used by the Catalina Conservancy Divers, so that’s not an option.
www.vision.com is another great domain name, but it’s already in use, by a “business change and IT consultancy with a unique approach.” Don’t bother with the link – they don’t appear to have any connection with our industry at all, although I’m sure they’d be glad to help. And www.vision.net is a Montana company that provides broadband internet services, in Montana.
Interestingly enough, www.machinevision.com appears to be available, so that might be a good investment for someone. Another idea I tried was www.visionintegrator.com. Seemed like a good name, but apparently the folks at Decision Technology thought so too, as they own it. But, they are at least in the machine vision integration business, so I guess we can’t complain too much.
So did I help my friend with his naming problem? Well I put together a little routine that generates every possible combination of seven letters. I’m sure that buried somewhere in that list of 8 billion items we’ll find a few snappy sounding words. They can’t all be registered, can they?
