Another source for cameras

Well it’s happened again; I’ve stumbled across yet another CCD camera manufacturer that I’d never heard of. This time the company is Kappa, and according to their website, they’ve been in business over 20 years. Who knew?

As you might expect, they’re a German company, and they seem to have kept a low profile in North America. Perhaps they have all the business they can support in Europe and don’t need to expand westwards. Their particular specialty appears to be cameras for harsh environments – temperature extremes and vibration – and they have a wide range of models to choose from.

No prices on the website, and I’d guess they’re not going after the budget end of the camera business, but if you have a tougher-than-average environment, a Kappa camera might be something to investigate

From what I can tell, the IEEE 1394 Digital Camera List is the most exhaustive and up to date list of available IEEE 1394 cameras. In a lot of cases, you can even see the camera price and which revision of the IIDC spec is supported.

Kappa is even on there!
