Tennis has been using video technology to detect when the ball is 'out' for some years, and finally the same concepts have been applied to soccer.
This story from www.techlime.com describes a fascinating vision application developed in France by i2s. Apparently they use four cameras to determine whether the ball has crossed the line into the goalmouth. That should put a stop to all those tedious post-match debates and let the fans get on with the serious business of drinking.
