About twice a month I’m asked why neural networks aren’t used for image analysis. The simple answer of course is that they are, but only for very specialized applications. Consequently, there aren’t many packages available to implement NN-based image processing. The Halcon package from MVTec does have a neural net module, although I have to confess that I’m unfamiliar with it.
But according to Machine Design (www.machinedesign.com) neural net usage may be about to take off. To learn more I suggest you read the article, “New Way to Look at Machine Vision,” and when you’re done with that, make sure to read the links provided. They lead to some good additional sources of information.
