Niche market example

It’s tough to make money in the machine vision integration business. Development time has a way of overrunning the budget, but when payment depends on delivering a working system, what choice do you have? That’s why it’s so important to win those jobs with replication potential, or better yet, find a niche and exploit it

That seems to be the approach taken by Miralogix, (formerly Image Labs International,) in developing a range of equipment for inspecting catalyst substrates. They put a lot of interesting information up on their web site, so if inspection is your thing, a thorough browse is in order.

And to my point about making money, according to the blog “holylander.com” the top-of-the-line “CATPRO 7000” inspection system sells for $480,000. That’s a big number, so I have to assume the profit is also rather substantial.

One of the biggest impacts we have experianced, in recent years, has been the new generation and availibility of Smart cameras. Smart camera technolgy has changed the face of the machine vision industry, providing highly integrated, easily configurable image processing tools, built directly into the camera. These intelligent cameras are available at relatively low cost, and can be configured by anyone with a little training, removing the need (in part) for specialist machine vision/ development integrators. Specialist integrators are increasingly going to find it more difficult to justify high costs unless they focus on high value niche markets..
