I suspect that over 95% of machine vision applications take place in the visible and Near IR range of the electromagnetic spectrum. The number of X-ray systems around is very few. No doubt this is due in part to cost, but I think there’s also a certain fear factor when it comes to the use of X-rays.
That’s regrettable because X-ray, coupled with automatic defect recognition (ADR) has a lot to offer. If you’re interested in learning more, a good start point might be, “X-ray Inspection is Solution for Blister Packaging Line at Pfizer,” published on the Mettler Toledo web site.
The article does a pretty good job of explaining why conventional methods – visible light vision and checkweighers – struggled to find all the defective product, and goes on to discuss the benefits reaped by switching to X-ray.
Might be an approach to consider for your next system.
